Calaceite - the Village

"Where nature surrounds you, embraced by fantastic mountains, flowing between the Matarraña and Algars rivers...

A compact, well-preserved historic centre that breathes antiquity...

It reflects a unique beauty in its façades, arches, streets and dreamlike monuments...".

The history of the village begins in the Bronze Age, around the 5th century B.C. until the 3rd century it was inhabited by the Iberians. Juan Cabré Aguiló, son of the village, was an archaeologist who analysed it and discovered important testimonies of this culture. You can find documentation of his work in the museum that bears his name: the Juan Cabré Museum.

The first mention in ancient documents dates back to 1180. In its chequered history, the village developed under the rule of the Moors, the Order of Calatrava, the Bishopric of Tortosa (until 1823). During the Civil War, Calaceite was occupied first by the Republicans and then by Franco's troops. As a consequence, as in the whole region, many people emigrated to France. The architecture of the village was spared natural disasters and bombardments during the Civil War. Today it has a well-preserved architecture from the last centuries. During this time, there were periods of prosperity that have left their mark. Calaceite has been considered a "Bien de Interés Cultural" since 1974

Art and culture have always been important. This is how the ‘Latin American boom’ writers José Donoso, García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and Carlos Fuentes achieved a certain fame. It all began with the Chilean Donoso, who visited his translator Didier Coste here and immediately bought a house where he invited many friends. It was mainly South American poets who settled in Calaceite. Later, creative people from many fields came to work here for a while and then, as they all have in common, they left after a few years.

Activities in Nature and Local Culture

Exploring nature and enjoying outdoor activities has become a popular trend among those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are several options that combine adventure, tranquillity and local flavour.

Walking trails offer a unique way to connect with the natural environment. Well-marked trails in national parks and nature reserves allow you to enjoy breathtaking scenery while exercising. For those who prefer to explore on wheels, mountain biking is an exciting option, taking adventurers on less travelled and challenging trails.

Another relaxing activity is to enjoy natural baths in rivers or hot springs. These waters are often found in picturesque locations, providing the opportunity to rejuvenate in a tranquil environment surrounded by nature.

Mountain Hiking: The mountains are ideal for hiking. With a variety of difficulty levels, these outings are perfect for beginners and experts alike. Plus, the panoramic view from the top always rewards the effort.

Traditional-Home Cooking: After an active day, there is no better way to recharge your batteries than by enjoying traditional cuisine. Many places offer workshops where you can learn how to prepare local dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Spaces of Tranquillity and Rest: For those seeking serenity, it is advisable to find spaces of tranquillity, such as botanical gardens or open-air meditation areas, which invite relaxation and contemplation.

Adventure Sports Activities: For adrenaline lovers, activities such as climbing, kayaking or rafting are exciting options that allow you to experience adrenaline-filled moments in natural surroundings.

Wine tasting: Finally, wine tasting is a cultural experience that cannot be missed. Many wine regions offer visits to wineries where you can taste local wines, learning about their production and tradition.

These activities not only allow you to enjoy nature, but also to connect with the local culture and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
